In its most definitive study of Americans’ weight, the Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention found that more than 120 million
people are obese or overweight— a number that has risen sharply
in recent years. Today, 61 percent of the United
States population is considered overweight or obese, according to the
Obesity Society. Defined by the National Institutes of Health as being
100 or more pounds over your ideal body weight*, morbid obesity is not
simply a disorder of will power. Physiologic, bio-chemical and genetic
evidence indicate that morbid obesity is a complex condition involving
family history as well as environmental, socioeconomic and psychological
factors.
At Saint Barnabas Health Care System, we realize
that weight loss is a journey – not
a destination. In order to be successful, it requires life-long changes and commitment.
That is why we created The Weight Loss Institute of New Jersey.
The Weight Loss Institute provides a variety of
weight loss programs individually tailored to meet your needs. Our
goal is to develop a relationship with you and support you throughout
your journey to better health.
Perhaps no other medical condition has been more misunderstood, mistreated
or misrepresented than obesity. At the Weight Loss Institute, we make
a long-term commitment to our patients’ health by guiding you
through the pre-surgery consultations, surgery, recovery and post-surgery
support programs.
It is important to understand that surgical treatment
is considered only when other methods have not been successful. The
surgery itself is only a tool to jump-start your body losing weight
- complying with diet, exercise and behavior modifications will determine
your ultimate success. Thus, it is important that
our patients make a long-term commitment to their health and the program.
Surgery should not be considered until
you and your doctor have evaluated all other options. As
with all surgeries, there are risks associated
with this procedure. Your doctor will determine if you are an appropriate
surgical candidate.
